Exclusive deal with new European case law provider

Justis Publishing has negotiated exclusive UK and Ireland distribution rights to material from European case law provider Caselex.

Translating them into English, the new Luxembourg-based company offers for the first time comprehensive summaries of judgments from national supreme courts for all cases relating to EU legal issues.

Covering company, competition, intellectual property, labour, and consumer-protection law – and more – Caselex’s fully searchable, highly efficient online database includes reports from most member states as well as EFTA countries such as Norway and Iceland.

As EU law becomes ever more important, the deal recognizes and caters for the practitioner’s increasing need to find cases dealing with key EU legal issues, particularly if there is no domestic precedent on which to base a case.

Complementing the existing European products, which cover EU law from 1951 onwards, Caselex is available alone or as part of the new Justis EU package, subscribers to the latter of which can enjoy substantial discounts.

Handy alternative to email for news and alerts

If you struggle to keep up with the frequently-updated content of our websites, why not subscribe to our new RSS feeds?

Now available for news on the Justis and JustCite sites, RSS – or “Really Simple Syndication” – offers a simple and intuitive mechanism for reactively monitoring changes to your favourite pages through your Internet browser or dedicated RSS reader. You can also be alerted to new cases from The Weekly Law Reports, with links to the full reports on Justis.

Justis RSS alerting works in a similar fashion, updating your feeds whenever your relevant saved searches return new results. It offers an alternative (or additional) means of tracking your alerts – especially handy if you have a crowded email inbox. See our Help page for more technical advice.

The latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox have built-in RSS capability, so to subscribe to one of our feeds simply click the orange icon to preview the feed, and then follow the instructions in your browser for subscribing. See our new FAQ What is RSS? for more advice.

Hints & Tips

Quick Search justifies its name

If you’ve ever abandoned the hunt through sheer frustration, you’re not alone. Struggling to phrase search terms for texts that you’re sure exist but which you can’t find is a perennial problem for users of almost all search engines and databases.

But to combat this on the Justis service, we’ve expanded and enhanced the notes found through the More Help link on the Quick Search screen.

In plain English and with useful examples, we explain how best to:

  • Find a document when you know its publication reference
  • Find a case report when you know the parties
  • Find a document that contains specified words
  • Find a document that contains a specified phrase
  • Restrict a search using a partial reference
  • Use suggestions to pick your search terms
  • Switch to other search screens

So don’t give up, the chances are that what you need can be found very quickly with the help of these guidelines – or the established Quick Guides on our website.

Justis extends coverage of Scottish Session Cases 25 years beyond the competition

Recent additions to the Session Cases database now extend Justis’s continuous coverage of the definitive Scottish law reports back to 1873.

Exceeding its closest rival’s archive by a quarter of a century, the service also trumps the competition in its unique provision of printable PDFs.

Taking precedence over all other case law series in Scotland, the SCLR’s invaluable texts have expanded on Justis through three key acquisitions: the Session volumes, running from 1907 to 1929; the Fraser volumes, for the years 1898 to 1905; and the Rettie volumes – unavailable anywhere else in the world – which run from 1873 to 1897.

As with more recent cases, the new additions to the time-saving online service can be searched for via an intuitive index. Each PDF faithfully replicates the original page, preserves its pagination and automatically prints to A4, fit for court presentation.

Pre-Act of Union legislation will also be uploaded imminently.
