Independent Publishing Awards logo

“Guilding” the lily

Justis Publishing is a hot tip at this year’s prestigious Independent Publishing Awards. Recently revealed by the Independent Publishing Guild, the shortlists “showcase the very best of independent publishing in the UK”.

Down to the last three in the Publishing Technology E-Publishing category, the new version of JustCite was praised by the judges, who said that the company “has taken an innovative approach to the aggregator model and its efforts have paid off”.

The winners will be announced at a gala dinner during the IPG’s Annual Conference on the 8th of March. Disseminated, as it is, by the noiseless medium of email, we feel that through this bulletin we can legitimately claim to be quietly confident. Watch this proverbial space, e-publishing fans.

J-Link logo

J-Link Professional ready for beta testing

J-Link Professional, the latest legal research tool in the J-Link range, is ready for beta testing.

Delivered as a browser plug-in, this unique software can significantly increase fee-earning capacity through the reduction of time-consuming and often fruitless research.

J-Link Professional eliminates manual searches for documents that are cited on any web page. Delivering information on the value of those documents, it enables faster decisions to be made on the necessity of further detailed investigation.

Allowing users to stay on the web page they’re viewing, J-Link Professional provides a translucent layer of information over the document being read. From that information, users can decide whether to view the full text of a cited document, reachable through links to any of the major providers, including Westlaw, LexisNexis, Justis, OPSI, BAILII, PLC, Informa and more.

By Integrating with the JustCite data collection, one click of the J-Link Professional button in the browser automatically identifies and lists in a side panel all documents cited in the text, while further clicks give information on legislative amendments, subsequent cases, articles cited and other vital information for any citation selected.

This is the age of the train

We have appointed a dedicated Customer Liaison Manager and Trainer for users of Justis and JustCite. The move reflects the company’s redoubling of efforts in helping people adapt to the enhanced services it now offers and encouraging their ideas to be aired.

The post has been filled by popular internal candidate David Finch, already known to the legion of customers he served as Account Manager.

Offering more than one-way advice, David will also relay users’ comments to our technical team. Through focus groups, ad hoc face-to-face sessions, over-the-phone and in correspondence, customers will now have a greater say in the development of our services.

We’re also organising a series of focus groups. If you’d like to participate, please email communications@justis.com.

News trawl

We have launched a weekly legal news roundup on the Justis and JustCite sites. Complementing our own stories, the free service provides summaries and links to a range of legal news from around the world, covering the full spectrum from quirky light relief to serious journalism.

Updated on Tuesdays, this regular feature will keep you abreast of legal developments that, from their often obscure sources, you might otherwise miss. See the current selection.

Nine-tenths of the law: JustCite in the SLR

A number of JustCite users from across the board were recently interviewed for their views on the service. The revealing results of this investigation are published in the January edition of the Student Law Review. Read the full story.

Keep an eye out for the next issue, in which we interview an inspiring barrister and focus on a tricky case for which JustCite proved indispensable.

Hints & Tips

Wild Thing

Improvements to our Help pages and the underlying functionality of Justis and JustCite continue apace. The flexibility of our technology now allows users to combine most types of search, a useful example being phrases with wild cards.

The phrase search paragraph in the search operators section of the Help pages gives the following advice:

To search for a phrase, enclose it in double quotes, using wild cards if appropriate, for example: "grievous bodily harm"; or "illegal immigr*".

The wild cards link itself explains that an asterisk (*) in this context can stand for any number of characters (including zero) in the middle or at the end of a word.

Though these links lead to the Help pages on the Justis service site, similar information and functionality is built into JustCite.

Title Talk

ICLR logo

Business class

Justis is adding the authoritative Business Law Reports to its rapidly expanding service. Launched last year by the peerless ICLR and updated monthly, cases in the new series have been selected for their usefulness in advising business clients. Covering company, commercial and intellectual property law, the overlap with the Law Reports will be marginal.

Arranged as an easy-to-search, focused collection, it is rare among specialist series in that it does not confine itself to a narrow academic field of law. Instead, its subject matter is of interest to chancery and common law practitioners, and to solicitors whose clients are concerned with issues such as arbitration, building, competition law, business tenancies, contracts, banking and taxation.

Access to printable PDFs, that replicate the pagination and appearance of the originals, will be available through the unique red Justis PDF tab; while an archive of over 3,000 related cases previously published in The Weekly Law Reports is in preparation.

JustCite logo

Growth spurt

In little over a year, the number of cases indexed by JustCite has increased by 110,000 to a whopping 425,000, while the total number of documents indexed stands at over 1.67 million.

Significant additions in recent months include over 25,000 cases from Australian provider Timebase and over 2,000 from the Singapore Academy of Law, both vital to our efforts to comprehensively cover non-UK commonwealth law.

Growing more quickly, so to speak, than the law itself, JustCite is fast becoming the definitive entry point to full-text case law, legislation and articles.

Practical Law Company logo

PLC in PLaCe

Following a deal struck in December, data from PLC, the Practical Law Company, has now been indexed by JustCite and is fully integrated into the service.

Updated frequently, PLC’s enormous bank of practical information includes practice notes, standard documents, drafting notes, standard clauses and checklists, all of the content of which JustCite provides links to.

Events

European Information Association logo

EIA, hi ho!

We can confirm that this year’s annual conference of the European Information Association will be attended by Justis Publishing. Taking place on the 17th and 18th of March, the event will be held at the University of Chester.

An international body of information specialists whose aim is to develop, coordinate and improve access to EU information, the EIA, through its conference, will provide the ideal springboard to showcase our new Justis EU package, including Caselex, now with over 100 cases added monthly. But account executive Emma Wiseman will also be on hand at our stand to demonstrate the attributes of all our new and established products and services.

Law London logo

Justis Publishing to debut at Law London

Justis Publishing will be at this year’s Law London exhibition, taking place at Olympia Two on the 12th and 13th of March. Playing host to 4,500 legal professionals, Law London is the sector’s largest exhibition and training congress.

Between some of the fascinating seminars you might attend, come and meet our friendly representatives at Stand C9, where you can sample the latest from Justis and JustCite.
