The European Information Association (EIA) has awarded Caselex the 2008 EIA Award for excellence in European information provision in the electronic sources category.
Justis won exclusive distribution rights to the groundbreaking service for the UK and Ireland late last year, extending the scope of its already highly-regarded Justis EU package.
This prize represents an acknowledgement of Caselex’s contribution to bringing highly-needed EU-based case law from all corners of Europe into a user-friendly service where traditional barriers, such as multiple languages, have been eliminated.
See the Title talk section below for details of recent additions to this service.

A thrilling mock court battle at the annual ICLR mooting competition was recently witnessed by two excited members of our sales team. Fought at the Law Society in London between teams of students, the event was sponsored by Justis Publishing and focused on an imaginary case of exclusion from school for dress code violation.
Sales manager Simon Watson explained that though the participants were impressive, the judges threw in a deliberate curve ball to fox the prosecuting counsel, namely that a case they’d cited had been overruled. It hadn’t. But, speculates Watson, had JustCite been used beforehand – ironically it hadn’t – they might well have known this and gone on to win the case as well as the contest.

Speaking of our versatile citator, publication of our latest advertorial in the Student Law Review narrowly precedes this email. For the April edition we interviewed enthusiastic JustCite user Christopher Purchas QC of Crown Office Chambers. Continuing to win cases for London’s largest civil common law set, he caught up with us in a rare moment of downtime to discuss several high-profile court battles, the intricacies of a key case and the tricks of his trade.

 Hints & Tips
Ever improving the usability of our services, our technical team offers the following tips this month.
Client codes: more than meets the eye
23rd April 2008
You can associate client codes with the time you spend using Justis on your saved searches, alerts and documents to which you save links. These details can then be viewed in My Justis. But, given the far-reaching usefulness of such a device, it is not restricted to work for clients. Students, for example, can use the handy feature to group together documents for essays. JustCite tabs within Justis
23rd April 2008
Many documents in Justis are related to earlier and later case law and statute law documents. Through in-built JustCite links, lists of these can be found by clicking one of the green tabs that appear at the top of the Justis document. As the information comes from JustCite, more information is available to its subscribers. Abbreviations used in “Cases Considered”, “Amendments” and “Amended By” tabs.

We recently signed an agreement with Cambridge University Press to electronically publish the entire back catalogue and future editions of the International Law Reports. The exclusive deal will make the Reports, which go back to 1919, available in a fully-searchable online format for the first time.
Professor Christopher Greenwood CMG QC, one of the Reports’ general editors, said: “International law nowadays impacts on the legal system of every country in the world. It’s therefore particularly important that decisions on international law are widely accessible. The partnership with Justis will achieve that.”
Our MD Masoud Gerami welcomed his comments and highlighted such areas as intellectual property and patent law amongst the many that interest legal professionals worldwide. “We believe that this collection sits perfectly alongside our key UK and European legislation and case law titles”, he said, “and its availability on Justis will give practitioners a powerful tool.”

Further justifying its award, Caselex has added a sixth area of case law – public procurement – to its expanding database.
Offering fully-searchable, comprehensive summaries of judgments in English from national supreme courts for all cases relating to EU legal issues, the material on Caselex is already essential when no domestic precedent exists, and currently covers company, competition, intellectual property, labour, and consumer-protection law.
The first batch of cases for public procurement – set to rise rapidly – is represented by 98 cases from 10 EU member states.
Material on information and communications law, technology law – including telecoms and privacy – and on environmental law will also follow shortly.
As an aside, readers may be interested in Justis’s sister service Tenders, the alerts of which are regulated by public-procurement law.

Over 1100 Oxford University Press journal articles from a growing list have been indexed by JustCite. Twenty-four leading titles – most of those shown here – have been chosen for their fit, with highlights including the European Journal of International Law, the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice, the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, the Statute Law Review and the Human Rights Law Review.

Don’t forget that we recently added Business Law Reports to Justis. The new ICLR-derived series covers company, commercial and intellectual property law, and will interest chancery and common law practitioners, as well as solicitors whose clients are concerned with arbitration, building, competition law, business tenancies, contracts, banking and taxation.
Events
23rd April 2008
It’s Dublin’s turn to host the forthcoming annual conference of the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians from 12th to 14th June and Justis Publishing will be contributing to the craic.
This year’s theme, entitled “Beyond the Pale”, is “planning for the next information generation”. Showing how our products fit like a glove, our reps will be on hand – no pun intended – to demonstrate all of the above new additions, along with the many established products that have undergone technological and content developments since last year’s meeting.
23rd April 2008
If you’re the wrong side of the pond, you can instead catch more of the same at the 46th Annual Conference of the Canadian Association of Law Libraries – or if you’re of a Gallic persuasion, l’Association Canadienne des Bibliotheques de Droit.
Taking place from 25th to 28th May in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – spiritual home of the tongue twister – the meeting will be attended by our expert team, equipped with the usual tools to demonstrate our wares.
 Let’s focus
23rd April 2008
Justis Publishing invites hungry applicants to its next focus group. Our first session, which took place earlier this year, was of such a high standard that we eagerly await a repeat performance with a fresh batch of users. A date will be set once we know who’s onboard but we can confirm that it will take place in a London restaurant and it will be our treat. Please email us if you’d like to take part.
As always, we’d like to hear from you. We value your feedback on all of our products and services so please feel free to email us with any questions, comments or requests.
