JustCite: seek and ye shall find

10th November 2008

JustCite's search interface has been blessed by two new attributes that will enable users to find appropriate material even more quickly.

The first concerns JustCite Digest, the new and exclusive case summary section that we've started to add to recent records. It is now fully searchable through both the Quick search screen and the Subject field of the Cases search screen.

The second is that the Articles search screen has been refined. Users can now search both the subject of journal article records and their abstracts. This allows for greater flexibility, broader results and less reliance on knowing the exact wording used in the subject sections.

Happy days.

As an aside, you can keep abreast of all recently added data on this regularly maintained page - www.justcite.com/about/new-data.html - which can also be reached via JustCite's About section under New Data.

Making the news elsewhere

10th November 2008

In the last issue we urged you to look out for the various journal articles we'd been commissioned to write. These are now available to read for free through the links below. Including the views of practitioners, researchers and librarians, they discuss numerous topical issues and - in passing - show how our products can solve the problems highlighted.

From the Australian Law Librarian

“Observe, by how much the soul is more worthy than the body, by so much the more I am to obey God than a terrene prince. But neither law nor reason, permits that children or sons should condemn or judge their fathers, and therefore I decline the sentence of the king as being to be judged by God alone, by the Pope”. This cryptic opening is put into context – click here to continue reading and look out for the upcoming follow-up piece on the hows and whys of foreign precedent.

From The Barrister

Mention of it makes him extremely animated. Now one of their directors, he has been at the company since 1999. His primary stock in trade is searchable, full-text electronic case reports from the ICLR and elsewhere, but he believes the “it” in question – globalization of the law – is an inexorable phenomenon, sweeping across jurisdictions and significantly affecting the way practitioners operate. “It seems like a natural progression”, he says, adding that “in many fields it’s no bad thing for the world”. See who he is and what he and others have to say by clicking here.

From Your Witness

“The glory of litigation is the oral advocacy of counsel and their ability to reformulate a case to meet the exigencies of forensic debate. Moves that help win the case may not help with the rational development of the law”. So said Lord Justice Buxton at the start of last month's Incorporated Council for Law Reporting's (ICLR) seventh annual lecture. See what else he said and why it's relevant to Justis and JustCite by clicking here; and look out for our Europe-themed submission for the next issue.

From the Student Law Review

Relishing the prospect of the “showmanship and excitement of the court arena” for as long as he can remember, his words could fit with the public's somewhat stereotypical image of an over-confident, extroverted young barrister.

In print, that is; for in person and offstage, Simon Gledhill is mild and self-effacing, diffident even. But these traits disguise a ferocious intellect and a tenacity that rewarded the 25-year-old Yorkshireman with a pupillage at a top criminal set two years ago, where he has seen his case portfolio swell. See why by clicking here.

Titles talk

Canada Law Book titles to be indexed by JustCite

10th October 2008

From early next year JustCite will index case reports from the prestigious and long-established Canada Law Book.

Following our recent expansions into Australia and Singapore and forming a part of our drive to index a growing list of common law jurisdictions’ law reports and journal articles, the key titles to be indexed through this arrangement are: Canadian Criminal Cases - 1898 to present; Dominion Law Reports - 1912 to present; and Labour Arbitration Cases - 1948 to present.

Our managing director, Masoud Gerami, pointed out that this is JustCite’s first such partnership in North America. He explained that the index will be of interest to practitioners and researchers from many jurisdictions including Australia and the Caribbean and, of course, the UK, adding: “We’re delighted to have come to this arrangement and look forward to working with Canada Law Book”.

Collectively the titles cover: decisions from criminal and quasi-criminal cases from all Canadian courts and jurisdictions; cases on patents, industrial design, copyright and trade-mark law; Supreme Court of Canada decisions, leading civil and criminal cases from all common law provinces and cases of general interest from Quebec; and labour reports reporting arbitration awards and judicial decisions from all Canadian provinces and jurisdictions; all of which will enhance the precedent-finding options of common law practitioners worldwide.

Open access to selected electronic Session Cases

10th November 2008

Selected Session Cases are now available for free on the new Scottish Law Reports website that we helped to design. With open access at www.scottishlawreports.org.uk/resources/open-access.html, these reports demonstrate the quality of the case material itself and the usability of the Justis platform.

This follows last December’s news that we’d extended our coverage of these cases back to 1873. Surpassing the competition by 25 years, we include the Rettie volumes, for 1873 to 1897, which cannot be found electronically elsewhere.

Also see the new ICLR for Ireland website, which we recently worked on.

IALL see you in Puerto Rico

10th November 2008

Conference season has drawn to a close but we have one final tour of duty this year, the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) annual conference.

Taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico from 30th November to 3rd December, it will be attended by our commercial director, Jonathan Daymond, and international sales manager, Simon Watson. Both will be glad to demonstrate the full Justis Publishing portfolio, including, of course, the recently launched International Law Reports Online.

And finally. where's Barrister Bear?

10th November

As regular readers of our various conference-related emails will attest, Barrister Bear is always on the move. To celebrate his good counsel across the globe and to challenge your powers of observation and deduction, we’ve decided to run an occasional “Where’s Barrister Bear?” competition. To enter this month’s contest, simply identify the location in the picture above. Send your answer to commincations@justis.com before 28th November. The first correct entry drawn from the hat on that date will win Barrister Bear himself.

We hope you found this email useful and informative. You have received this message because you are a subscriber to or have expressed an interest in a Justis Publishing service. If you no longer wish to receive emails of this nature please unsubscribe.
